Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup of white whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 6 tablespoons of cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of peeled and chopped apples
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar

Directions

11 steps

For the Fritters

  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400°F and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with a silicone baking mat.
  2. Step 2

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  3. Step 3

Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture until it forms coarse crumbs.
  4. Step 4

In a separate small bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this into the flour mixture and stir just until combined.
  5. Step 5

Gently fold in the chopped apples.
  6. Step 6

Drop the batter onto the prepared baking sheet, using about 1/4 cup per fritter.
  7. Step 7

Bake for 11-13 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden.
  8. Step 8

Transfer the fritters to a wire rack and set the oven to broil.

For the glaze

  1. Step 1

Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Add a dash of cinnamon for extra flavour!
  2. Step 2

Lightly brush the fritters with a thin layer of glaze and broil for 2-4 minutes, until the tops turn golden brown.
  3. Step 3

Once out of the oven, brush the remaining glaze over the warm fritters. Let the glaze set before serving.
