  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • For the Caramel Cream Cheese Icing:
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 3 cups icing sugar (powdered sugar), sifted
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling/swirl

Directions

10 steps

Spiced Cake

  1. Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans (or one 9x13-inch pan) with parchment paper.
  2. Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom.
  3. Step 3

In a large bowl, whisk together canola oil, eggs, Greek yogurt, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.
  4. Step 4

Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in batches. Stir until just combined — avoid overmixing.
  5. Step 5

Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Step 6

Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Make the Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting

  1. Step 1

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Step 2

Gradually add icing sugar, vanilla, and salt. Beat until smooth.
  3. Step 3

Stir in ½ cup caramel sauce until fully incorporated.
  4. Step 4

Frost cooled cake layers and drizzle with extra caramel. Use a knife or toothpick to swirl for a decorative finish.
