
Ingredients
- 1 can (14 oz/398 ml) black beans, rinsed and drained
- 340 g (3/4 lb) medium-lean ground beef
- 40 g (1/2 cup) panko breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 5 ml (1 tsp) Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) chili powder
- 1 red onion, cut into rounds ½ inch (1 cm) thick
- 6 hamburger buns
- Mayonnaise, to taste
- 6 leaves Boston lettuce
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced
- 250 ml (1 cup) store-bought salsa (optional)

Step 1
Preheat the grill, setting the burners to high. Oil the grate.Step 2
In a food processor, finely chop the black beans. Do not purée them. Place in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Season with salt and pepper.Step 3
With your hands, shape the meat mixture into 6 patties. Place on a large plate. Lightly oil the patties.
Burgers
Step 1
Grill the patties and onion slices for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until the meat is cooked through and the onion is golden. Grill the hamburger buns, if desired.Step 2
Cover the inside of the buns with mayonnaise. Place the patties on the bun bottoms. Top with the grilled onion, lettuce leaves, tomato and avocado slices. Garnish with the salsa. Close with the bun tops. Delicious served with oven fries.

Although created for the barbecue, this recipe works just as well in a cast iron grill pan on the stove top, if the weather isn’t cooperating.
